Stephanie and Steven’s Boulder Engagement

Urban Setting Engagement

We’re going to a little place called Aspen, but before we get there this summer we had to visit Boulder with Stephanie and Steven.

We don’t advertise our services. Rather we rely on word-of-mouth, and luckily for us people like to talk. A wedding we photographed last year led this lovely couple to us. We met and they decided, right then and there. Judging by the fun we had on our meet-and-greet photo session in Boulder last month this wedding should be a blast.

JL’s 2013 Found Gems

It’s been a while since we’ve been updating the blog here. So I’m going to blast you with a TON of photos. Lots of things were luckily going on through the fall and then the holidays and then the New Year…it all just turns into a blur. But I really wanted to share some of the photos that jumped out to me as I went back and looked at the year that was 2013. These are mostly photos that didn’t get a chance to be on the blog or are moments that I really enjoyed capturing. Wishing everyone a fantastic 2014 and dozens of memories like these.

Mead High School Senior Portrait

Colorado Senior Portrait, River Senior Portrait

Rachel, a Mead High School senior, knew exactly what she wanted for her senior portrait, making my job almost too easy. As we photographed I learned why this place in Lyons, Colorado, along the St. Vrain River was so special to her family. It’s where they picnic, spend holidays in the summer, and very near where her parents once lived. Now, a couple months later it’s hard to believe this location is vastly different.

The water was no longer this calm a month later.

Lyons was one of many towns that were impacted when water tore through Colorado. The flooding has since changed the course of the river, ripped the banks away, and changed people’s lives in an instant. Looking back now I’m fortunate we were able to make a memory here for Rachel before it was too late. It may take years before we can do it again.

Donovan and Lisa’s Intimate Backyard Wedding

Backyard Wedding Ceremony

Outdoor weddings are a gamble. Outdoor weddings in Colorado are a bigger gamble. Outdoor weddings in Colorado and in April are probably the biggest gamble of all.

The week leading up to Lisa and Donovan’s big day was snowy. Not just a little snow, but a lot of snow. I really thought I would be photographing their backyard wedding in my snowboarding gear. But the wedding day saints were on their side. The sky was clear for most of the day, the temperatures were perfect, and their intimate gathering went off without a hitch. A few rain drops were taken care of by the bride pitching in to set up a tent. The iPad kept playing tunes through speakers wrapped in plastic and the Maker’s Mark kept flowing.

I know I say this after every wedding, but it really did feel as though I was long-time friends with Lisa and Donovan. In fact some of the guests thought I’ve been friends with them for a while. Nope, I met them in January. Once. This was a true testament to how genuine these two really are toward everything and everyone.

Witnessing their approach to the wedding was refreshing. Their choice to focus on what is truly important proved to me yet again that extravagance doesn’t equate to importance. Because when you boil it down all that is important to their relationship was represented: their love, the inclusion of Donovan’s kids into the marriage, 40 of their closest friends and family witnessing their vow, and what is perhaps the coolest wedding cakes ever.

I had a blast photographing this one and getting to know a little more about these two. I wish them the best of luck and appreciate them trusting me!
